Young Generation Increasingly Typing on Virtual Keyboards

There is a constant difference in the typing speed between the “smart” keyboard on a mobile or tablet and the conventional computer keyboard.

As new scientific research proves, young people type much faster than their parent’s generation.

The comparative study by the universities of Aalto, Finland, Cambridge, Britain, and ETI Switzerland in more than 37,000 users of various ages from 160 countries, who were asked to type in both mobile phones and computers, was presented at the 21st International Conference on Interaction. Devices (MobileHCI) in Taiwan.

It was found that those who write on the touch screen of their mobile phone with two fingers, achieve an average speed of 38 words per minute, which is only 25% slower than the average speed on the physical keyboard of a computer.

Researcher Said Anna Fate of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETI) in Zurich said that “although one can type much faster on a physical computer keyboard, up to 100 words per minute, they actually reduce the percentage of people who do so.”. Most write 35 to 65 words a minute. “

Researchers predict that the more people write sparsely on physical keyboards and more often on virtual screen keyboards, the more the “scissors” will close on the typing speed (with the help of artificial intelligence that complements the words on its own).

The speed record on a mobile phone is elusive
The speed record on a screen keyboard in the study was achieved by a user who wrote at an impressive 85 words per minute, which few people can achieve even on a physical keyboard.

It is noteworthy that the participants in the study reported that they spent about six hours a day on their mobile devices (phone or tablet).

With so much time on a screen, it is expected that the user will gradually improve his typing speed.

The crucial point, according to the researchers, is to get used to writing on the screen with two fingers and not just one.

According to the research sample, three out of four users (74%) type in their mobile or tablet with two fingers, which gives them a great speed advantage.

Also, most users now use some kind of “smart” device help when typing, and only 14% do not.
