Apple introduced a new feature in iOS 14.5 that will allow users to manage to track app data. Essentially, Apple provided users with a new security tool, but on the other hand, declared war on large companies that specialize in advertising and collecting data from people to serve targeted ads. In particular, Facebook and Instagram have already responded to this innovation.
Apple users who have installed the iOS 14.5 update, will now see a notification when launching the Facebook and Instagram apps. In this notice, Facebook and Instagram explain why they need user data, but one point seems very dubious – “Help keep Facebook / Instagram free.”
Facebook and Instagram will most definitely lose a certain percentage of revenue due to user refusals to provide data. To compensate for the potential losses, Facebook and Instagram may become paid apps on iOS. Other types of monetization are also possible, for example, increasing the internal amount of advertising.
In general, it is not yet clear what exactly Facebook and Instagram will do, but the first calls are already alarming.
