Organizers of the Tokyo Game Show have announced that this year’s event has been canceled due to the COVID-19 epidemic. TGS 2020 was supposed to be held at the Makuhari Messi Convention Center outside Tokyo on September 24-27, but there are now plans to host an event online.
It has been canceled for the first time since the launch of TGS in 1996, but the news won’t surprise anyone. This year has kicked off with virtually every single game event schedule, the biggest show in the United States and Europe, respectively.
TGS 2020 is likely to gain more attention than the average next year due to its status as the last major trade show before the launch of the upcoming next-gen consoles PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Both systems are ready to go on sale. This holiday season, it’s probably going to be more limited than usual.
Microsoft has already started the cycle of online promotions for the X Series, before today showing the first games on new hardware. Sony has been even quieter, so far only revealing the logo and specs of the PS5.
