Content creators will be able to choose the subscription price for their followers.
Audio streaming platform Spotify is currently working on developing paid subscriptions for podcasts, with which users can pay directly to creators, and for which Spotify will not get a commission.
This has been assured by sources familiar with the matter to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), who affirm that the new Spotify podcast subscription system will be announced next week on the service.
This novelty comes just days after Apple announced its intention to introduce paid subscriptions to its Apple Podcasts service in 170 regions in May, with prices that creators can choose and a commission of between 15 and 30%.
In contrast, the alternative that Spotify plans to introduce next week does not contemplate any commission for the platform, nor will it require creators to pay to use the service. They can also choose the subscription price they want.
The new Spotify podcast subscription service will be available in its app for both Android and iOS, and in the case of Apple’s system, the Swedish platform plans to use an external payment system through a website, to avoid this let Apple get a commission on the payments.
The use of payment systems not reviewed by Apple and without commission for the App Store is not allowed in the policies of this platform and was precisely the cause of the elimination of Fortnite last summer due to the introduction of an external payment mechanism by Epic Games.
