Sextortion Scam: Fraud of Sexual Blackmail for Laughs and Cries

A new form of fraud has been reported on the internet in recent days. This is the internationally known “sextortion scam” fraud, which is manifested by the mass sending of e-mails to various recipients of gender and age, in order to deceive them.

In particular, unknown perpetrators using fraudulent e-mail accounts, send mass messages to recipients and inform them that they have access to their device and the message has been sent from their personal account.

At the same time, they are informed that malicious software has been installed, after their visit to a website, which has activated the camera and recorded them in personal moments.

It is further pointed out that the malware has taken all the users’ contacts from social media and the perpetrators threaten to send the disputed material to their contacts, in case they do not receive bitcoins.

Attempts to blackmail victims with the threat of publishing sexually explicit files are internationally referred to as “sextortion“.

These blackmailing emails mainly have the following forms and content while the reference to real codes is made to convince users of the true threat.

They ignore the messages and do not deposit money in the accounts provided by the perpetrator, do not open any attachments in emails from unknown senders, never communicate with blackmailers for any reason, immediately change any security code (password) they think is compromised, evaluate their computer’s security settings.

Citizens can contact, anonymously or by name, the Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate to inform or report illegal or infringing acts or activities that take place over the Internet.
