Microsoft Updated Windows 10 KB5001330 Issues

Windows 10 appears to have gotten a server-side patch to fix performance drop, lag, screen flickering, or text rendering issues when launching certain games. All of the above issues were detected after installing the latest Windows 10 updates: KB5001330 (required) and KB5000842 (optional).

In March, Microsoft released the KB5000842 plug-in, which was a patch intended to address performance and printing issues caused by the March Patch Tuesday update. But it caused even more problems for some users, including games. Microsoft was aware of the performance issues on many systems. However, they appear to have migrated to Windows 10 KB5001330, which was recently released as a must-have security update. These fixes are installed automatically and can only be rejected by the user if they disallow system updates or change Group Policy settings. But those with Windows 10 Home installed don’t have Group Policy and can only pause updates for a month.

As more and more users received the mandatory update, the issues with the games were more and more discussed in the forums. It got to the point where an NVIDIA representative even advised users to uninstall the latest Windows 10 update if they were having issues with dropping frame rates in games.

In addition to gaming, on some Windows 10 systems, the KB5001330 patch results in a number of other bugs, including a blue screen of death, a bug with a temporary user profile, a Windows Mixed Reality headset issue, and business software.

In an update to its support document for KB5001330, Microsoft finally confirmed that the Windows 10 updates issue is affecting some users: “A small group of users reported poor game performance after installing this update. Most of the users affected by this issue work in full screen or borderless mode and use multiple monitors.”

Microsoft has already prepared a solution to resolve this problem. The solution is implemented as a server-side patch and does not require a full system update. Sometimes the company implements such updates on the server side: they automatically deactivate new code introduced in mandatory updates on systems connected to the Windows Update service. The patch will be distributed this weekend. Some affected users have already reported to Windows Latest that their games started working fine after checking for updates and restarting the system.
