iPhone 14 Pro Camera Pixel Count Will Be 48MP

The rear camera of the iPhone has been limited to 12MP for a long time, but it is reported by a famous analyst that the 2022 iPhone 14 Pro (provisional) model will be enhanced to 48MP.

Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst familiar with Apple’s supply chain information, expects four iPhone 2022 models to be released. However, the breakdown is the relatively cheap 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch models, and the high-end “Pro” will be two models, 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch, and the expectation that the 5.4-inch mini model will be abolished is as I told you yesterday.

Kuo says that the number of pixels of 48MP is limited to the Pro model. It is not mentioned in detail whether the non-Pro 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch also increase the number of pixels even if it is less than 48 MP, or whether it can be improved by other methods.

It is also stated that although the sensor is 48MP, the output resolution on the iPhone side may stay at 12MP. That is, he may choose to use a smart scaling algorithm that captures raw data at 48MP while converting it to a more detailed, less noisy 12MP image. This is called “4-cell merge output mode” and is also the method used by some high-end Android devices.

In addition, the raw size of each pixel is about 2.5 μm, which is reportedly significantly larger than the 1.7 μm of the iPhone 12. The larger the pixel, the more light it can capture and the less noise it has. It is expected that the pixel size will increase to 2 μm while maintaining 12 MP on the iPhone 13 (provisional), which is expected to be released this fall.

Kuo also expects the iPhone 14 to have an improved camcorder system that will support 8K shooting for the first time. This is not limited to the Pro model, but all four models can be used.

The image data size is likely to be horrifying when it comes to 48MP and 8K shooting, but the expectation that the iPhone 13 will have a 1TB internal storage option may also factor in that future.
