Most Google (Alphabet) and Facebook employees will continue to work from home until the end of the year, although the offices of both groups are expected to reopen this boreal summer, depending on the evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet (Google’s parent company), told employees that they will likely work from home for the rest of 2020, according to information confirmed by Google.
Pichai spoke to staff on Thursday during a weekly general online meeting. He explained that those who need to return to the office will be able to do so in June or July, using reinforced security measures, but they will be the exception.
Alphabet employs more than 100,000 people worldwide. In late April, the group had already specified that teleworking would continue until at least June 1, and that the return would be “staggered” and “incremental.”
The same was decided by Facebook, according to the American press. The global social network plans to reopen its various offices starting July 6, but all employees who wish to can continue working from home until 2021.
Facebook employed 45,000 people worldwide at the end of 2019 (not counting the thousands of workers working for subcontractors) and plans to recruit another 10,000 to accelerate the development of its product and service offering, particularly tailored to social distancing measures.
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, had already announced last month that his group would not hold meetings of more than 50 people until July 2021 at best.
