On April 15th, Mozilla announced a policy to remove the FTP implementation built into the Web browser in “Firefox 90”. FTP protocol support has been discontinued in v88 for “Google Chrome” and “Microsoft Edge”. “Firefox” looks like this.
According to the official blog “Mozilla Add-ons Blog“, the FTP function has already been disabled in “Firefox Nightly” and “Firefox Beta”. When you access the URL of the “ftp: //” protocol, you will be prompted to open it with an external application. This specification will be introduced to the stable version in “Firefox 88” scheduled to be released on April 19. After that, with “Firefox 90” released at the end of June, the FTP implementation itself will be removed from “Firefox“.
As the FTP function is deprecated, the flag “browserSettings.ftpProtocolEnabled” that switches the FTP function ON / OFF becomes read-only. Even if it is turned on, the function is not activated (it has no effect). Extensions will no longer be able to handle the FTP protocol, so developers will need to modify the protocol handlers to let external applications handle the FTP links.
