Wikipedia’s online encyclopedia is now blocked in China, and access to its publications in all languages is banned, the Wikimedia Foundation has confirmed.
Initially, the Chinese version of Wikipedia was banned, but then the inability to access users was universally extended to encyclopedia editions in any language. The blockade was implemented without any prior notice, the Wikimedia Foundation said, according to the BBC.
Thus, Wikipedia is being added to a growing list of online sites in China that have fallen victim to Chinese authorities who monitor the Internet with an “iron hand.”
In 2017, Wikipedia was temporarily blocked in Turkey, while this year the same thing has happened occasionally in Venezuela.
