Following Google’s example, Apple has also created an online tool that records changes in people’s travel and habits, following restrictive measures of social distancing due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The company’s goal is to help the public health authorities ensure that the population complies with the measures.
The new tool (Mobility Trends Report) initially covers 63 countries (compared to 131 for the corresponding Google tool), showing a 63% reduction in walking and 68% in driving between January 13 and April 13. However, it also reveals that in our country the reduction in travel had reached its largest decrease in about April 4 and 5, but since then there has been a gradual increase in both hiking and car travel.
How the Apple Tool works:
Apple’s tool is based on the use of the Map on all iPhone devices and, according to the company, does not violate users ‘personal data, as it does not associate Apple Maps data with users’ identities, nor does it keep track of where it went. each user.
At present, Apple’s tool, which is updated on a daily basis, records changes in only three categories of travel: on foot, by vehicle, or by public transport while Google’s tool includes more options (stores, parks, offices, etc.). In general, however, the two tools seem to provide similar images for individual countries.
In fact, Apple has fewer data available than Google, which uses data not only from every Android device but even from Apple’s iPhones, which have Google Maps installed.
