Apple is exploring the possibility of displaying 3D images on a flat-screen iPhone or iPad. The company has already received a patent for this technology, although this does not guarantee that the product described therein will be presented to the general public. Additionally, Apple itself has stated in a patent application that demonstrating large content on a tablet and smartphone can have a number of side effects that can even make the user dizzy.
It is found that it is much easier to implement the work with three-dimensional objects of augmented reality using an AR / VR viewer, since the device follows the eyes of the user, allowing to show the “correct” image. At the same time, the iPhone or iPad will not be able to follow the user’s gaze so precisely, which will lead to side effects.
The patent describes technology similar to 3D glasses but does not describe how to ensure that each eye does not see an image directed at the other. The company plans to implement a line-by-line matrix control displaying two different images of alternating rows of pixels. It should be noted that this can be quite annoying and to reduce blurring you will need to use strobe or pulse backlighting.
Most of the patent describes the technical nuances of implementing this functionality. It should be noted that Apple is not the first in this field. LG and RED have tried to launch smartphones with 3D displays at different times, but their devices have not been claimed in the market.
